Sound environmental management is essential to a sustainable development approach. Gaz Métro’s Environmental Management System (EMS) embodies this principle.
The EMS covers Gaz Métro’s natural gas distribution activities in Québec. It has been registered in accordance with ISO 14001 by the Bureau de normalisation du Québec – Enregistrement de systèmes (BNQ-ES) since October 2000 and that certification has been renewed on each occasion since. Gaz Métro was the first natural gas distribution company in Canada to have its EMS registered under.
In line with the EMS, Gaz Métro endeavours to prevent or reduce the negative impacts of its activities on the environment.
Action taken within the framework of the EMS have enabled Gaz Métro to make remarkable progress in several respects, including:
Gaz Métro also ensures that day-to-day actions undertaken comply with its Environmental Policy, which forms an important part of the EMS.
Through its Environmental Policy, Gaz Métro is committed to continuous improvement in:
- preventing pollution;
- promoting energy efficiency; and
- replacing more polluting energies.
In terms of governance, every year, top management monitors Gaz Métro’s environmental performance against the EMS.
ISO 14001 – Environmental Management Systems – was established in 1996. It is part of the ISO 14000 family of standards covering the various aspects of environmental management.
Gaz Métro is committed to maintaining the certification of its EMS according to this standard because it is recognized internationally and because it allows certification by a neutral third party. The company thereby ensures that it remains in compliance over time and corrects any problems as and when they may arise.
